What is Slow Fashion and Why is it Important?

The term ‘Slow Fashion’ is one we’re hearing more and more, and often it is coupled by words like ‘ethical’ or ‘local’. So, what exactly is Slow Fashion and why is it so important?

Slow Fashion is a movement that promotes the idea of slowing down the fashion cycle by moving away from fast-paced trends and disposable fashion that end up in landfill after a few wears. It focuses on timeless, high-quality designs, and considers the resources and processes required to make our clothes and accessories.

The fashion industry is in high demand, and with high demand comes mass production. The way we buy clothes has changed so much since the Industrial Revolution. Think of the last time you popped into Kmart and emerged with multiple items that were so cheap, you just couldn’t resist..? You may be asking why we shouldn’t be celebrating the convenience that comes with getting everything we want when we want it, in every possible colour and every possible size, but that convenience comes at a cost.

Unfortunately, when fashion is produced and put to market at such a fast pace, it's often unethically manufactured which can have detrimental consequences for the environment and the people involved. It also makes it difficult for small and ethical producers to compete. Slow Fashion aims to counteract this culture, advocating for environmental and social justice in the fashion industry.

Slow Fashion also encourages people to support local businesses using the notion of quality over quantity and making the hard work and uniqueness behind a product seen and valued. Mindful consumption fosters a connection between consumers and their purchases.

I am an advocate of Slow Fashion. I have invested time and energy into sourcing ethical materials and I make every Ella Jackson piece in my Tasmanian studio. The feedback I have received from customers shows that investing in Slow Fashion is about more than just buying something…it is about a story; a connection; a value proposition.

So next time you discover a Slow Fashion brand, tell your friends and family about it and join the Slow Fashion Revolution!
